Shima Kirmani, an artist and activist, is poetry in motion. She continued to learn and perform traditional dance and music in the 1960s, despite social and occasionally political obstacles.
She is also one of the few people in Pakistan who has received classical instruction in the dance forms of Odissi, Bharatanatyam, and Kathak. She founded Tehrik-e-Niswan (Women’s Movement), an organisation that fights for the rights of women and addresses their health, equality, and educational concerns, in the 1970s. And the fact that classical dance and theatre are still practised in Pakistan is due to the relentless efforts of individuals like her.
